Down Syndrome Ireland is seeking to fill the position of Specialist Counsellor who will develop, coordinate and deliver a range of services related to the care and support of people with Down syndrome and their families.

Role Duties & Responsibilities will include:

    • First line counselling support to new parents and to children and adults with Down Syndrome, and their families
    • Coordinating access to all available support services
    • Developing and conducting a range of relevant Training Programmes and Workshops at Regional and National level
    • Working closely with associates to support policy and practice in a range of areas including Ethics, Education, Sexuality and Independence.
    • Liaising with DSI members and service providers across a spectrum of needs
    • Participating fully as a member of the DSI National Resource Team


The successful candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, experience and abilities as a minimum requirement:

    • Degree in Counselling / Psychotherapy
    • Registration with a recognised professional body
    • Preferably an additional qualification in a related area, such as Drama Therapy, Art Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy or a background in Healthcare
    • Non-directive Counselling experience across a range of contexts, for example Bereavement, Marital, Personal Development
    • Experience working with people who have Down Syndrome or an intellectual disability, and their families
    • Practical experience creating and developing bespoke Programmes and Training
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with strong emotional intelligence
    • Proven ability to work successfully on own initiative and as part of a wider team
    • Mature approach to coping with challenging situations
    • Capacity to fulfil the role with confidence, professionalism and empathy
