Cuts to Rehabilitative Training Allowance of €31.80 per week an ‘attack on the most vulnerable in society’

Down Syndrome Ireland strongly opposes the decision to scrap the rehabilitative training (RT) allowance, worth €31.80 a week per student, for new entrants which was announced earlier this month by the Health Service Executive (HSE). We call for a full reinstatement of this allowance which is an essential financial support that contributes to increasing participation in lifelong learning for students with disabilities.
See and Learn – Training days

Starting in the West of Ireland, our first ever See and Learn workshop took place in our Down Syndrome Ireland Cork Branch. The workshop was brimming with eager participants that where keen to learn the techniques and materials associated with the early years support programme.
New DSI Regional Centre will provide services for the west of Ireland

Down Syndrome Ireland is developing a new regional centre in Swinford Co. Mayo to provide vital services to children and adults with Down syndrome in the west of Ireland. We are redeveloping a home donated to Down Syndrome Ireland by Máirt Cambell (R.I.P.), who wished to provide a focal point and space for people with Down syndrome in the area.
Personalised Budgets – an update from the HSE on the demonstration projects

As a mother, since her son Aaron was born 11 years ago with Down syndrome, Mary has fought hard every minute of the day to ensure that Aaron reaches his full potential. As a young mum with a newborn baby with disabilities she experienced first hand the lack of services and facilities from medical-card issues, provision of language therapists and special needs assistants to help children get the best start in life.
