This year’s Conference and AGM is being hosted by our Louth Meath branch and will take place in the beautiful historic town of Trim County Meath on Saturday the 29th in the wonderful setting of the Trim Castle Hotel.

We look forward to seeing a lot of new and familiar faces at this year’s event.  

As well as our AGM, we also have lots of workshops taking place throughout the conference on topics that will be of interest to all of our members and their families. We ask that you please book your place in advance so we can accommodate as many members as possible throughout the weekend. Friday 28th June: Meet & Greet

  • Meet and Greet Programme

     

    8 pm – Down Syndrome Ireland Conference and AGM and Conference

    Why not get the weekend kicked off with a celebration of the talents of our members! On Friday evening, our wonderful Louth-Meath Branch is hosting a welcome reception for all local and visiting families who are attending our Conference and Annual General Meeting.

    The welcome reception promises to be an event to remember and will feature adult and teenage members with Down syndrome displaying a range of talents and skills in music, dance, drama and sport. The reception will kick off at 8pm Friday 28th June in Trim Castle Hotel, Trim County Meath.

    Finger Food will be served on the night.

    The event will provide an excellent opportunity for our member families to meet and socialise.

Saturday 29th June: Conference & AGM

Here’s a rundown of all that is happening at our Conference and AGM on Saturday. We have lots of talks and workshops taking place throughout the day. While all the day’s programmes are free of charge, they must be pre-booked in advance, and you can do that right here.

    9.30 am to 10.00 am – Welcome and update on our strategy  

    Gary Owens, CEO will welcome you to our 2019 Conference and AGM and will speak about creating value through building a data-driven organisation

     

    10.00 am to 11.30 am – Workshops

    • Workshop 1:

    Touch-Type, Read & Spell – 10 am to 11:30 am

    Learn all about Touch-type, Read & Spell (TTRS), which is an award-winning, multi-sensory course that teaches touch-typing, reading and spelling for people with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia and other learning differences. 

    Learning how to touch-type is an important life-skill today.  The course allows for repetition and can provide the kind of automatized feedback and step-by-step learning from which individuals with Down syndrome can benefit. The talk will be given by Carol Pitcher from Castleknock TTRS.

    • Workshop 2:

    Advocacy in Action – 10 am to 11 am

    Leigh Gath is the HSE Confidential Recipient. The Confidential Recipient is a voice for vulnerable adults with a disability or older persons receiving services from the HSE or organisations funded or partially funded by the HSE. Leigh has campaigned tirelessly for many years for the rights of people with disabilities and has graciously offered to share her experience and expertise with us.

    Parents Plus Pilot – 11 am to 11:30 am

    Down Syndrome Ireland’s Adult Advocacy Officer Helena Connors will speak about Parents Plus, which is an Irish charity that develops practical, evidence-based parenting and mental health programmes. We are delighted that Down Syndrome Ireland has been selected to participate in a pilot for their new Parents Plus Disability Programme, which aims to address the particular needs of parents of adolescents aged 11 to 18 with an intellectual disability. The programme may be extended to a broader age range. The programme will support parents to deal with the challenges of raising a child with a disability and will be designed to be relevant to all levels of intellectual disability.

    The evening meal was originally priced at €26 per person. However, thanks to our Louth-Meath Branch for subsidising €10 towards the overall cost, the price of the evening meal is now €16 per person (including teenagers and children).

    Superstar DJ and DSI member Andrew Walker will be spinning out the year’s hottest tunes at our Summer Hits Disco party, which kicks off at 8.30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to get down and grove! Finger food will also be served on the night.   • Conference: 0-6 Year Old Programme

    Gulliver’s Childcare/Crèche

    Gulliver’s Childcare Trim is opening especially on Saturday morning from 9 am to 5 pm catering for all children aged 0-6 year olds. Gulliver’s will supply a full complement of staff and have volunteered their services for free.

    Children will be given drinks and snacks free of charge – Gulliver’s is located just across the road from the Trim Castle Hotel.

    A huge thank you to the team at Gulliver’s Childcare Trim for this extremely generous contribution to this year’s Conference and AGM.

    AGM – 6-16 Year Old Programme

    9:30 am to 10:30 am –  Speech and Drama: Part One with Nessa Lynch (Chance to Shine)

    Through movement, children will work on coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, spatial awareness and positive body image through fantasy play and games. Activities will help children to develop fine and gross motor skills.

     

    10:30 am to 12 pm – Drumming with David Day

    Jabba Jabba Jembe drumming is a high energy hands-on introduction to the world of hand drums and world percussion.

    This workshop allows people of all ages to have fun playing drums and a wide range of hand percussion instruments in a friendly group environment, participants explore rhythm through chants, body percussion and get to express this in their group.

     

    12 pm to 1 pm – Brickx Club

    Brickx Club is an all-inclusive club and all abilities are welcome. It was originally set up by parents of children with additional needs, who worked in the education sector and wanted a club outside the norms of what was on offer to their children.

    The club has mountains of different LEGO® sets – Minecraft, city, friends, boats, planes, houses, cars, lorries…

    Your child will love their creative LEGO® or DUPLO® building workshops on the day.

     

    1 pm to 2 pm – Break and refreshments with family

     

    2 pm to 5 pm – Speech and Drama: Part Two with Nessa Lynch (Chance to Shine)

    *Brickx Club – Running all day from 9 am to 5 pm.

    The *Brickx Club was originally setup by parents of children with additional needs who worked in the education sector and wanted a club outside the norms of what was on offer to their children.

    *Please note that the Brickx Club workshop will be running all day from 9 am to 5 pm, however a time slot has been allocated for the 16+ program from 12 pm to 1 pm, please note that we will need you to collect your child 15 minutes before 12 pm to allow this program to begin – thank you for your cooperation.

    Free Family swim for all 9–10 AM (Private Session) on Sunday 30th June.  Bring your swim gear and enjoy some family time in the pool, which is opening early especially for our families.

    Tours of Trim Castle: Free private tours can be arranged to view what it Ireland’s oldest Norman Castle for people with additional needs.  Pre-booking is essential as there is a maximum of 11 in each group.

    Alpaca Farm Drinadaly: (12noon – 1.30pm) Why not enjoy some unique family fun with a visit to an Alpaca Farm, which is home to not just alpacas but also mini ostrich, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, geese, owl, wild boar, & Iron age pigs.

    Private family tours for our members can be arranged, though pre-booking essential. The cost is €6 per person.

    Boyne Valley Activities: If you and your family love water sports, then this is the activity for you! The activity centre offers river tours, kayaking, rafting and much, much more!  Pre-booking is essential.

    A private walking tour of Trim: Maybe you would prefer to meander around Trim on a walking tour to see all the local attractions, which can be arranged if sufficient notice is given. Sights include Trim Castle, Yellow Steeple, St Mary’s Abbey, St Patrick’s Church, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Town Walls & Town Gates, Newtown Abbey, the Tomb of the Jealous Man & Jealous Woman. Pre-booking is required.

    Aura – Trim Swimming Pool: Located just a five-minute walk from Trim Castle Hotel, the Aura – Trim swimming pool is open on Sunday and there is plenty of car parking available.

     

    ‘Dear Dot’ Exhibition: A special exhibition is open at Trim Visitor Centre entitled ‘Dear Dot’. The exhibition includes letters, photos and memorabilia from the life and times of Dot Tubridy, who was a long time friend of the Kennedy family and an unofficial Irish ambassador to the US. Ms Tubridy is credited with starting the tradition of the Taoiseach presenting US Presidents with shamrock in a Waterford Crystal bowl. The exhibition was officially opened by Courtney Kennedy & Sydney Kennedy Lawford, nieces of late President John F Kennedy.  

     

    Norman Armoury Display in Town Hall Visitor Centre: Located just across the road from Trim Castle Hotel, the display is one not to be missed! The display costs €2 per person and group concessions are also available. There is no booking required.

     

    Play Centre: Oaktree, Business Park (10:30am -6pm). Theplaycentre.ie is suitable for babies to 12 year olds. Our Louth Meath branch has arranged a concession price of €5.50 for 1.5 hours for our members. You will need to make a reservation by calling the centre on 046 431432. 

     

    Hot Air Balloon Flights: Why not create an experience of a lifetime and enjoy a hot air balloon ride!
