Down Syndrome Ireland is asking people to rock ‘LotsofSocks4DSI’

We are asking people to rock ‘LotsofSocks4DSI’ and share images and videos on their on social media today to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (Sunday, March 21st). The ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign represents the extra chromosome that people with Down syndrome have and is internationally recognised to raise awareness about Down syndrome.

Barry Sheridan, CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland, said: “We know we are still in challenging times, but we’re asking for people all around the country to give it socks today by spreading some fun on their social media feeds and helping us mark this international day of celebration of people with Down syndrome today.”

Down Syndrome Ireland’s annual Purple Run in the Phoenix Park is the charity’s celebration of World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st. It’s always a fantastic fun event for all the family! Sadly, this year’s Purple Run cannot take place as planned due to the pandemic and ongoing restrictions.

However, some 2,000 people including children and adults with Down syndrome, their families, friends and supporters are taking part in a virtual Purple Run (5km or more) during March to mark World Down Syndrome Day and support people with Down syndrome and their families.

Barry Sheridan, CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland, said: “We are so thankful to the 2,000 people across the country who’ve come together while staying apart by taking part in our virtual Purple Run to raise awareness and vital funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.”

One year on, Down Syndrome Ireland – which is considered a vital lifeline for many families – continues to serve our members and anyone who needs help during the ongoing pandemic. The charity’s team – who offer advice, support and information for all ages – are on hand to help families with children and adults who have Down syndrome throughout Ireland.

Down Syndrome Ireland has over 3,500 members throughout Ireland and in 2021 it will also begin its preparations to celebrate its 50th anniversary. 86% of Down Syndrome Ireland’s annual funding comes from public fundraising activities and the wonderful generosity of communities, workplaces, schools, and individuals throughout Ireland.

As many of the charity’s usual fundraising activities are still curtailed, Down Syndrome Ireland is asking for those in a position to do so to please make a donation.
