NEPS Guidelines: Special Educational Needs – A Continuum of Support

NEPS advocates a continuum of support for pupils with special educational needs. This graduated model of assessment and intervention begins with extra support from the class teacher in the regular classroom, followed by learning support and/or resource teaching interventions if necessary, and finally, the involvement of external services such as psychologists. This continuum approach is based on the recognition that special educational needs occur along a continuum from mild to severe, and from transient to long term (DES website, NEPS section).
