Down Syndrome Ireland is inviting applications for two Member Director positions on our Board

As we enter the start of our four- year strategy, Unity 26-30,  we are intentionally strengthening the Board with individuals who bring lived experience of Down syndrome, alongside the confidence to contribute at a strategic and governance level.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future direction of DSI at a national level. Board Directors play a critical role in safeguarding our mission, ensuring strong governance, and guiding the organisation so that it delivers meaningful impact for people with Down syndrome and their families across Ireland.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from family members of people with Down syndrome, including parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and extended family members. You do not need to be a parent to apply. A personal connection to Down syndrome is essential; prior board experience is not required.

We are seeking people who combine lived experience with the ability to think strategically and act in the collective interests of the organisation. You may bring insight into how systems work in practice — for example health, education, disability, or adult services — with an understanding of where families experience gaps, barriers, or transitions. Equally, you may bring professional experience in areas such as governance, finance, risk, digital, data, HR, legal, public policy, communications, fundraising, or organisational leadership. We value diversity of perspective and skill; no one individual is expected to bring everything.

What does the role involve?

Board Directors are responsible for oversight, strategy, and accountability. This includes attending Board meetings (approximately8/10 per year – a mix of online & in person) , contributing to strategic planning and performance monitoring, ensuring compliance with governance and regulatory requirements, and always acting in the best interests of Down Syndrome Ireland and its members nationally. Directors serve a fixed term in line with DSI’s governance arrangements.

These are voluntary roles. A structured induction, ongoing support and access to governance training will be provided to ensure Directors can contribute confidently and effectively.

Why this matters

Member Directors ensure that lived experience is not simply heard but embedded at the highest level of decision-making. Your perspective can influence national advocacy priorities, service development, partnerships, and long-term strategy. This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a stronger, more accountable, and more ambitious DSI for the years ahead.

If you are interested — or know someone within our community who may have the interest and capability to contribute at this level — we encourage you to consider applying and to share this opportunity more widely.

Applications will be reviewed by a Nominations committee, those selected will be called for an interview.
