World Down Syndrome Day at Dublin Zoo

Down Syndrome Ireland celebrated World Down Syndrome Day with a party in Dublin Zoo.
The event saw families who are members of Down Syndrome Ireland come together in Dublin Zoo for fun, music and insightful talks.
Over 100 people gathered on a sunny day in the Zoo to mark the significant day, on March 21st.
Families enjoyed an exciting magic show, creative face painting, music from our talented member DJ Gordo, as well as food, games and fun.
We were honoured to be joined by President Catherine Connolly, who met with members and families, and learned more about the work of DSI.

Attendees then came together for inspiring talks and speeches from those with lived-experience of Down syndrome.
National Advisory Council (NAC) Chairperson Fintan Bray spoke passionately about being a self-advocate, the work of the NAC and the support that they provide for fellow members.

Una Coates, who is public relations officer of the NAC also spoke about studying in Trinity College, working two jobs that she loves, and her experience and success in independent living.

Gina Daly spoke about being mam to Gene (4) who has Down syndrome. She discussed all the brilliant things about her little boy, and how DSI supported the family with early years support.

The event was hosted by administrator Ross O’Neill who has proudly worked for Down Syndrome Ireland for almost 20 years.

The event also served as the setting for two exciting launches from Down Syndrome Ireland.
Aidan Stacey launched Unity 2026-2030, our brand new strategy. This will be our roadmap for the next four years, in steering the organisation.

Minister Emer Higgins also launched Glór: Voices for Life partnership, a new speech and language plan to support people with Down syndrome across the country. You can read more here.
Thank you to all our families and friends who celebrated this significant day with us.
