On Monday 3rd November, Gina Grant, Branch Advocacy Coordinator, Down Syndrome Ireland, joined our Dublin branch to give a talk on independence, support, and future planning for young people with Down syndrome.

As children with Down syndrome approach adulthood, families face new challenges, important decisions, and exciting possibilities. The session explored what independence and independent living truly means after the age of 18, and how best to support these goals while respecting each individual’s needs and choices.

Speaking about the session, Gina said, “Helping our teenagers move into adulthood is terrifying, and having a disability compounds the fear. These workshops help us connect with others facing the same fear and navigate it with a bit more confidence, knowing we have each other’s support.”

The interactive session for parents and caregivers covered topics including:

  • Practical and emotional aspects of transitioning into adulthood
  • Options after 18, including education, work, supported living, and community involvement
  • The impact of 2023 legislation around decision-making support and rights
  • Entitlements for long-term carers and how to access them
  • Awareness about online scamming and how to protect vulnerable individuals
