On Tuesday April 28th 2026, Down Syndrome Ireland CEO, Aidan Stacey, and Down Syndrome Ireland Deputy CEO, Ruth Hickey, met with Minister for Children, Equality and Disability, Norma Foley, T.D. to discuss several key priorities for our community. We highlighted the need for stronger and more consistent consultation by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), particularly in relation to special class provision, so that decisions are shaped by the lived experience of our members and families.

We also discussed the phased rollout of GLÓR, with a clear focus on prioritising areas where there is currently little or no access to therapeutic supports, as part of our commitment to more equitable services nationwide. The Minister also noted that she was very proud to launch GLÓR in her constituency of Kerry on World Down Syndrome Day, recognising its importance for people with Down syndrome and their families.

A defined and supported pathway to employment for people with Down syndrome was another key priority, alongside the importance of improved data mapping. Building a clearer picture of where our members are, what supports they are accessing, and where gaps exist will strengthen our ability to advocate effectively and plan services in a more strategic, evidence-led way. This will require strong collaboration with government agencies and partners.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of national advocacy being coordinated through our National Office, ensuring a consistent and unified voice on the issues that matter most.
