The NCSE publish the list of Special Classes in Mainstream Schools, Primary & Post Primary. Our updated report giving an overview of the Special Classes (by County) in Mainstream Primary and Post Primary Schools for the 2025-2026 school year is now available to view. The figures contained in the report are those obtained from the updated NCSE list of April 23rd 2025.
Children with Down syndrome frequently face unique challenges in accessing suitable school placements. While some can and do thrive in mainstream settings with the right & structured supports, others require placements in special classes or special schools. Parents report difficulties in securing special class placements that appropriately match their child’s needs. As is highlighted in our report, the marked imbalance in the numbers of, for example, Autism /ASD classes nationally, against the numbers of appropriate class settings for children with Down syndrome requiring a special class, brings into clear focus the issues faced by parents as they struggle to secure an appropriate special class place for their son or daughter at primary and post-primary levels. We continue to advocate with the Department of Education and the NCSE for change in policy around the allocation of special classes for our members.
Every child with Down syndrome is entitled to a high-quality education, one that recognises and respects their needs, and that plans proactively for their future, not as an afterthought, but with intention and respect. Education should not be reactive or generic, but intentional, inclusive, and designed with dignity at its core.
