Remembering Nichola Aylward

Everyone at Down Syndrome Ireland is devastated by the loss of our CEO, Nichola Aylward.
Nichola was personally and professionally an incredible leader for Down Syndrome Ireland with a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as possessing the passion and care needed for this role.
Prior to her appointment as CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland, Nichola held key leadership positions in the corporate sector. Across her impressive career, she worked as a financial controller in Matrix Recruitment and as an accountant in various organisations. With a background as a Chartered Accountant, Nichola’s experience combined strategic leadership, people management skills and financial acumen with a deep passion for social impact.
Beyond her professional achievements, Nichola was the proud, adoring parent of her daughter Elizabeth who has Down syndrome. She would proudly share videos and stories about Elizabeth to staff and the many members she met.
Nichola served for a decade on her local Branch committee and served as National Treasurer on the Board of Directors of DSI.
Nichola was deeply committed to the strategic vision of Down Syndrome Ireland and to working towards equal opportunities for all people with Down syndrome all over Ireland. She believed fervently in the power of collective action to address systemic issues and create a more just and inclusive society.
Nichola became CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland in May of this year, and began a new era of impact and innovation at the organisation. She often referred to this role as her dream job. She worked tirelessly to advance the organisation’s mission, empower members, and strengthen DSI’s position as a force for good in Irish society.
“Down Syndrome Ireland is a richer and better organisation thanks to Nichola and the legacy of her work and spirit will continue to inspire us into the future. It is a fitting tribute to Nichola, that many of her initiatives will be fulfilled in 2025 and will remain as a testament to her short but effective tenure as CEO of DSI,” says Gerard O’Carroll, DSI President.
Among all her talents and skills, Nichola was also an incredibly warm, enthusiastic person, always open to new ideas and always excited about the changes she strived to implement.
Working closely with families and improving the lives of people with Down syndrome was at the centre of everything Nichola did.
We are so grateful for Nichola’s dedication and passion for over a decade in Down Syndrome Ireland. She will be missed beyond words.
