A Waterford teacher completed an amazing 21-hour run for World Down Syndrome Day.

Waterford was buzzing with excitement as teacher, Katie Jacob, completed her ‘Run for Dreams’ challenge on World Down Syndrome Day. Katie, a teacher at Waterford Educate Together NS, took on the challenge of running 63 kilometres in just 21 hours.

On Friday 21st March, Waterford Educate Together NS and Down Syndrome Ireland’s Waterford and South Kilkenny branch hosted the incredible endurance challenge. The event was held in memory of Nichola Aylward, former CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland and passionate advocate for the community.

Katie ran 3 km on the hour, every hour, and was joined by students and members of the community, as she completed the final 21st lap.

Speaking about the event, Katie said, “I am honoured to take on this challenge for a cause so close to my heart. Running for 21 hours may be tough, but it’s nothing compared to the strength, determination, and spirit of individuals with Down syndrome. Every step of this journey is dedicated to them and their right to dream big.”

The event raised over €10,000 for the Waterford & South Kilkenny branch. Speaking about the event, the branch said: “We are incredibly grateful to Waterford Educate Together National School for organising this incredible event. The funds raised will directly support local children and adults with Down syndrome, providing essential resources, therapies, and opportunities to help them thrive. Run for Dreams is a wonderful way to bring the community together and raise awareness in such a meaningful way.”
