Library Clubs
Down Syndrome Ireland Library Clubs for All Ages
Our national library club initiative is in collaboration with libraries across the country. Launched in 2022, this initiative offers a wonderful opportunity to bring people with disabilities together to enjoy books, share stories, and build friendships.
Library clubs are not just about enjoying reading material, but also about promoting communication skills, encouraging an interest in literacy, and building confidence.
Libraries play a key role in fostering a sense of community by hosting these clubs. Facilitated by experienced librarians, the clubs work to promote social inclusion and nurture a lifelong love of reading for people with Down syndrome.
Down Syndrome Ireland provides training to all staff, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to create an inclusive and supportive environment for people with Down syndrome.

Why Join a Library Club?
Library clubs are for everyone and you don’t have to be a big reader to join. Clubs choose the materials best suited to their members – anything from books and comics to movies and more. Some groups read a book together, while others let everyone choose their own reads or just meet up for social activities!
- Improved literacy and lifelong learning
- Building friendships through social inclusion and life skills
- Community participation and a sense of belonging
- Enhanced communication skills through discussions, self-expression, and active listening

“I like the book club because it’s a good to challenge myself and learn new skills. I was never a big reader in school but now I’m making time to read. Now I do it to relax. It’s fun too and I like meeting friends.”
